Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 8:12
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying,…
It’s been said, “If you want God to speak to you, read your Bible. If you want to hear God speak to you audibly, read your Bible out loud.” God, in his grace, speaks. He continues to speak through his word. The cannon is closed, but his word is as alive and active today as it was when it first burst forth from God himself. It’s his word that turns our hearts to him. It’s his word that gives the life of faith to dead and dry bones. In the same way that Jesus again speaks to his followers here, let us, at every opportunity, again turn our attention to his speaking.
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world…
Jesus is the image of the invisible God, and God is light. The sun, when it rises, gives light to everything it touches while it remains in the sky, but at the end of the day it sets, and the creation falls back into darkness. Jesus, though, is the spiritually eternal sun. He stands in the sky over his redeemed that they may remain in the light, and there is no sunset for them to fear. Jesus endured the darkness so that his redeemed would live eternally in his light.
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness…
In the presence of his light there can be no darkness. His light expels darkness altogether. If we continue in darkness, we can’t say that we follow him. Instead, if we walk in darkness, we have chosen to follow a different path, one that leads away from his light. God has given us all that we need to continue in the light. He’s given us his word to know, and his Spirit to illuminate and apply the word’s truth to our lives for our sanctification. His light guides.
His light is like a lighthouse beacon against the darkness of the night. Ships that know it move toward it allowing it to guide them safely home. Ships navigate difficult areas safely when they look to the wisdom of lighthouse. However, ships that disregard the lighthouse can’t say that they have followed the light or its wisdom, for if they followed the light they wouldn’t find themselves in the folly of darkness.
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
We can have assurance knowing that if the light of Christ has shown into the darkness of our hearts and compelled us to follow him, then we will inherit life. If God, by his Holy Spirit, has justified you by his sovereign grace through faith in the finished work of his Son, then you are bound inextricably to the light. Darkness no longer has a claim on you. Having been found in him, we too are the light of the world as his light now shines in and through us. The light of Christ is your light as well, and his light is life.
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
