John Calvin on Calvinists

I remember the first time I fully explained the Doctrines of Grace to my parents I told them that I was a “Calvinist.” The response I got will always stick with me. One of my parents (I can’t remember which) then said, “Wait, so you’re not a Christian?” Their tone was one of deep concern…

Asking for Bread

One reason we’re told to ask for our daily bread is because it’s a way that we affirm God’s Lordship over the entirety of creation generally, and the lives of us as individuals specifically. God provides for all of his creation. Like he provided a perfect daily portion of manna for Israel in the wilderness (Exodus 16), God also provides for us exactly what we require for each day, and he tells us to humble ourselves in view of his sovereign providence by asking him to continue. He knows our needs and gives to us accordingly.

Praying Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Father, I shall not want because I have no need that you haven’t provided for. You are my good shepherd and my good provider. You care for me in ways I could never expect to care for myself. Nothing that you have withheld from me is needed, because you have,…

The Importance of Theology

This post is adapted from a talk I was recently privileged to give to the men’s group at my local church. Introduction I want to start by putting all of my cards on the table and say that on this topic, I believe that the Bible is authoritative and clear regarding salvation and Godly living,…

My Top Five Blog Posts of 2017

I didn’t write enough to do a full top ten–nearly every post would have been on the list–so here’s a top five. I’m not surprised that The Beatitudes landed at number one since The Gospel Coalition linked to it over the summer, but looking back I’m a bit surprised that the others had so many…
